For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is
as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou has rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected thee from being king. 1Sam15:23 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way:
and God repented of the evil, that he said he would do unto them; and he did it not. Jonah3:10 God can change his mind one way or the other depending upon our response to Him and his word. Hebrews chapter six speaks of people who were enlightened, tasted the heavenly gift, and were partakers of the Holy Ghost, tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come, falling away and crucifying the Son of God afresh, not receiving eternal life. We can lose our salvation because of rebellion and stubbornness just like King Saul in the old testament. We must ever be sober and vigilant and our over-riding duty must be to obey God and his word “Not every one that saith Lord, Lord, shall enter.” and only by humility can we bow down and enter through the narrow gate. God has very high standards as well as great compassion and love. Unless we recognize that we are saved unto good works in which we have to walk (Eph2:10) we may think of ourselves more highly than we ought, and lose the precious gift of eternal life which we received through Christ. But if we stay humble and obedient, not puffed up, not vaunting oneself, God can change his mind about those that we are called to minister to and love. Just as through the disobedience of one all were made sinners, by the obedience of one, many shall be made righteous.(Rm5:15-16 paraphrased) We are called of God to make a difference in this world by humility and obedience and love. By being the people God has called us to be we can change God's mind for the good. But if we choose to be stubborn and rebellious, we can change God's mind for the worse. Let he who has ears to hear: hear.
