The key to life is not in the accumulation of wealth but in cultivating a capacity for enjoyment. The rich man might own the land but only the beggar enjoy the scenery. How do we approach life with this two-fold need, the one to make money and the other to know how to enjoy life? The answer lies in detachment, to be free from people, places, and things and to appreciate them in a non-clinging way. If the challenge of my job is merely to make more money, this might gratify my ego but do little to enhance my ability to enjoy what I do with it. Only by living in the moment, neither in the past or in the future, will guarantee that my life both on the job and off, will be one of enjoyment and not one of an addiction, a high when I get what I want and a low when I don't. It is by living in the moment, without attachments, that I become free and by being free, enabled to live life to the fullest and life one of joy. So occupy your time in awareness and not in some fabrication of the mind, and you will be successful on the job and in life as well. EOM |
